Medulloblastoma is a rare, life-threatening brain tumor that mainly occurs in children and adolescents. It is the most common pediatric malignant brain tumor, accounting for 20% of all brain tumors in children. In the EU and US around 400 new patients are diagnosed annually. Current treatments of medulloblastoma include chemotherapy and radiation, both of which are therapies that have serious side effects.

VIB News 19/07/2022
Scientists and clinicians from leading life sciences institute VIB, Harvard University, the Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital have managed to halt disease progression in terminally ill medulloblastoma patients. A monoclonal antibody, TB-403, was well tolerated and able to halt tumor growth in 7 out of 11 patients, of which more than half remained stable in their disease for longer than 100 days. The results of this study are promising and prompt further research to develop new therapeutic options for this disease with a high mortality rate.

Blood vessels sustain health and proper functioning of our body. A multi-disciplinary team of scientists, led by prof. Peter Carmeliet (VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology) has made several breakthrough discoveries concerning the metabolism of the individual building blocks of blood vessels - the so-called endothelial cells. They identified three key proteins that determine how blood vessels grow and behave, and that may become new therapeutic targets in blood vessel related disorders, such as life-threatening cancers and blinding eye diseases. For his pioneering research, Peter Carmeliet will receive the most prestigious international science prize, 2018 Heineken Prize for Medicine.

Onderzoek kost fortuinen
Streamlining blood vessel walls could lead to new cancer-fighting strategy
Streamlining blood vessel walls could lead to new cancer-fighting strategy
The angiogenesis foundation 20/03/2009
New research indicates that tumor blood vessels contain a protein sensor that detects minute changes in oxygen levels in tissues. These tumor vessels respond to the changes by becoming either more or less porous, which significantly influences the ability of cancer cells to escape through capillary walls and spread as metastases to distant organs. The findings are published in the March 6 issue of the journal Cell.

Tumour vessel 'abnormalization' describes the phenomenon by which severe hypoxia and excessive release of angiogenic cytokines leads to the formation of aberrant endothelial linings of tumour blood vessels.

New strategy to combat cancer: streamlining blood vessel walls
VIB News 6/02/2009
Leuven – Our blood vessels have a built-in rescue-mechanism that springs into action when there is insufficient oxygen in our tissues. VIB scientists at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have now discovered that this mechanism can be mobilized in the battle against cancer. When there is a shortage of oxygen, the cells lining the inner wall of blood vessels acquire a different shape, and they behave differently, too.

VIB News 31/01/2008
Many patients with a chronic disease or cancer have to contend with anemia - and the severe fatigue that accompanies anemia impedes the patient considerably in his or her daily activities. At present, the hormone EPO is administered to a large number of these patients to alleviate the anemia. But unfortunately, treatment with EPO is not always effective, and not all patients respond to this therapy.

When a blood vessel clogs up, a localized deficiency of oxygen results, causing the surrounding tissue to die. However, working with mice, VIB scientists connected to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have been able to prevent muscular tissue with severe hypoxia from dying. The muscles seem to 'adapt' to the lack of oxygen - a metabolic tour de force that animals also use when hibernating, but that has remained a mystery until now.

Innovations report 7/01/2008
Oxygen is necessary to life. Humans and animals use oxygen to convert fats and sugars into the energy that keeps all life processes running and maintains the body’s temperature. At the same time, oxygen can also be harmful when it is converted into toxic oxygen particles that cause serious damage to tissues and organs.
